In the bustling town of Changanassery, nestled in the heart of Kerala, lies a piece of history that continues to thrive with pride – the SV Pai petrol station, a name that has become synonymous with trust, quality, and heritage. Established in 1930, this petrol station holds the unique distinction of being one of the oldest petrol stations in India. Its remarkable journey from a modest kerosene business to becoming a household name is not just a tale of entrepreneurship but also a testament to the resilience and innovation of its founders.
The roots of SV Pai’s business trace back to 1901, when it began as an Asiatic Petroleum dealer in Kayamkulam. At the time, kerosene was the primary product of trade, catering to the agricultural needs of Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala. The supply of crude oil and kerosene in those early days was a lifeline for farmers, helping power pump sets crucial for irrigation in the low-lying farmlands.
By 1930, the business expanded to include petrol and diesel, then the fuels of the modern age, supplied by the Burma Oil Company. Fuel barrels were transported from Ernakulam to Changanassery by large boats, a logistical feat at the time. The initial operations were based at the Changanassery boat jetty, where workers would unload the barrels for distribution. From Changanassery, petrol and diesel were transported to the hilly regions of Kumily via bullock carts, showcasing the sheer determination and resourcefulness of the team.
The first petrol station began operations in front of the old New Theatre in Changanassery. Later, in 1968, it was relocated to its current location, solidifying its place as a landmark in the town.
The founder, affectionately known as “Mannenna Pai,” was a visionary who foresaw the growing demand for petroleum products in the region. Though initially juggling the kerosene and petrol businesses, the challenges of labor disputes and operational complexities led him to streamline the focus solely on petrol and diesel distribution. This decision marked the beginning of a new era for SV Pai.
Over the decades, SV Pai’s petrol station has stood as a beacon of reliability and quality. Its commitment to excellence was recognized on a grand scale when it was awarded the title of the best petrol station in South India. The accolades, however, were just one part of its legacy. What truly set the station apart was the bond it shared with its customers, many of whom have remained loyal for generations. Notable among them are the Changanassery Aramana (the royal family) and the Nair Service Society (NSS), both of whom have been steadfast patrons since the station’s inception.
Today, the legacy of SV Pai is carried forward by the new generation – Mohandas Suresh Pai, his mother Seemanthini, and his wife Asha Suresh. Together, they have ensured that the values instilled by their forefathers remain intact. With a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, they have managed to keep the station relevant in a fast-changing world while preserving its old-world charm.
