Eravikulam National Park Set to Reopen for Visitors on April 1st

Exciting news for nature lovers and adventure seekers! Eravikulam National Park, located in the picturesque region of Munnar, will reopen its gates to visitors on April 1, 2025. The park, renowned for being a sanctuary for the Nilgiri Tahr, had been temporarily closed since February 1 to protect the delicate breeding season of these magnificent mountain goats.

A Thriving Habitat for Nilgiri Tahr

During the closure, the park has witnessed a remarkable increase in the population of Nilgiri Tahr, with several new calves born across various areas, including Kumarikallu, Anamudi, Varayadu Motta, Mesthirikettu, Lakkam, and Rajamala. The highest concentration of newborns has been reported in the Kumarikallu area, although the exact number of calves will be confirmed following a census conducted by the Munnar Wildlife Division after April 20.

Previous Census Highlights

In the 2024 census, a total of 827 Nilgiri Tahr were recorded, including 144 new calves. This marks a slight increase from the previous year, where 803 Nilgiri Tahr were counted, with 128 calves noted. These figures highlight the successful conservation efforts in place to protect this endangered species.
